This course is designed to gain knowledge and learn behaviors that are important for improving quality of life now and investing in future well-being. If a student receives credits as part of a vocational and technical education (ETC) course that corresponds to a non-ETC course that meets another graduation requirement, the student does not need to earn a second credit in the non-ETC graduate course and vice versa. The single course would meet two degree requirements. However, it would grant only one loan. The student should then purchase an additional optional loan, as the total points for the degree do not change. Designed to prepare students for the rigor and pace of college studies, this course requires students to consistently demonstrate their commitment and competence in the study of language arts. Students read challenging texts from the world literature, write analytical essays, and read secondary critical sources.

Throughout the year, students will explore works of fiction, including full novels and plays, as well as thematic non-fiction, explore different perspectives on a particular topic, appreciate the wide range of opinions on the topic, and advance their own ideas in the context of current debates on the topic. Students will continue their study of analytical writing with an emphasis on critical essays and academic conversations.
