What is Podiatry?
Podiatry (also known as chiropody) is the diagnosis and treatment by podiatrists (chiropodists) of diseases and disorders of the feet. Podiatrists are highly skilled health professionals who have been trained to prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs. They also prevent and correct deformity, keep people mobile and active, relieve pain and treat infections.
A podiatrist can treat, manage or advice for the following signs and symptoms of the feet:
Toe and Skin issues:
Onychomycosis (fungal nail infections), Ingrowing Toenails, Blisters, Callous/hard skin, Veruccas, Athlete’s Foot (skin fungal), Dry skin (heel cracks), Corns.
Musculo-Skeletal issues
Pain at the ball of the foot/toes (Metatarsalgia , Morton’s Neuroma), Bunions, Heel Pain (Calcaneal Spur/Plantar Fasciitis), Arthritic Foot, Flat feet (Pes Planus), High arch foot (Pes Cavus), Sport’s injuries (repetitive injuries, chronic tendonitis), Back or hip or knee pain originating from misalignment of the foot, Limb length difference (that could cause Scoliosis)
ABOUT THE PODIATRIST: YIANNIS LOUVARIDES
Podiatrist Ioannis Louvarides has qualified with a BSc (Hons) Podiatry from Durham School of Podiatric Medicine in 2006. The following year he worked as a locum Podiatrist for the National Health Service (NHS), Leeds PCT, in the United Kingdom.
In 2008 he started his postgraduate studies at University of Brighton and in 2010 he graduated with a Masters Degree in Podiatry with Diabetes. The year after, he worked at a Diabetes Centre in Singapore treating high risk diabetic foot conditions in a multidisciplinary team. In addition, he was often undertaking biomechanical assessments and treatment for young athletes.
Returning to Cyprus in 2010, he founded the Podiatric Diagnosis clinic where he works to this day. He is a member of the British Society of Podiatry, and registered to the British Health Professional Council. Also, he is a member of the Cypriot Diabetic Society as well as the Cypriot Anti-rheumatic society, and currently he is the secretary of the Cypriot Society of Podiatrists.
